Segments and Audiences
What is the Difference Between a Segment and an Audience?
SEGMENTS
Segments are specific demographics of your users. They can be based on activity, custom variables, user attributes, etc., and since they are reusable, they are ideal for frequently targeted groups.
AUDIENCES
Audiences, like segments, are specific demographics of your users targeted by engagements.
Segments and Audiences are essentially the same, categorizing your users based on specific attributes. A segment is a group of users that you want to analyze and an audience is a group of users that are targeted by a specific engagement.
The key difference is that audiences include a random selection option, so random users can be targeted for A/B testing.
When Should They be Used?
Segments are ideal for demographics or user groups that are used or examined frequently and are often the target of engagements.
Audiences are ideal for target segments that require only minor customization, such as the time of day that an engagement might appear for a segment or a random selection from the target audience segment. Segments can be the target audience of an engagement, so it can be easier to create a commonly used segment as the target audience.
